Norval Morrisseau, the Father of Canadian Woodland Aboriginal art, is a well-documented and acclaimed artist from the Thunder Bay area of northern Ontario.
In the 1970s he worked primarily in the Thunder Bay, Winnipeg and Toronto areas before moving to the West Coast in the late 1970s and has spent most of his life there since then. Through these years it was hard to say just where he considered home, being quite a nomadic fellow.
Morrisseau burst onto the art scene in 1962 with his first solo exhibit at the Pollock Gallery in Toronto. Through the publishing of his art in serigraph form first via the Triple K Studio (owned by brothers Henry, Joachim and Goyce Kakegamic and later Great Grasslands of Winnipeg, and Anthonys of Toronto his art was made available throughout Canada and the international art world.
He has received numerous awards and recognition. However, possibly the first Canadian Woodland Aboriginal to be given the opportunity of a solo exhibit at the National Gallery of Canada ranks as the highest recognition of his creative and imaginative talent.
