Cyril Assiniboine

Cyril Assiniboine, a Saulteaux born in 1959 on the Long Plain First Nation community near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, dramatically captures the essence of the powwow dancer and the elaborate regalia of his culture.
Since 1982 the artist has been associated with The Wah-sa Gallery, which gave him his first one-artist show in 1983. In 1997 the gallery published the first Assiniboine limited editions, "Dog Soldier" and "To the Beat of the Drum", followed by a series of four prints representing various dance styles (Hoop, Jingle, etc.). The artist’s print, High Steppin’, was commissioned by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1998 and, in 1999, the Health Sciences centre commissioned Assiniboine’s Honing the Gift to commemorate the contribution of John Kim Bell, Aboriginal composer and head of the National Aboriginal Achievements Award Foundation.
Cyril himself is a dancer, having performed in Canada, the United States, and, in 1994, at a sponsored exchange in Sweden.
Assiniboine has had additional one-artist shows with the Wah-sa in 1998, 2000, and 2003. He also participated in the 2001 to 2004 Miniature shows, and the June 2003-5 Theme exhibitions. In November, 2003, he was among seven Woodland artists selected for the Image Makers First Nation Art Exhibition in Los Angeles. In 2004 he submitted the winning design concept for the “Round Room”, a commission from the Winnipeg Regional Health authority, and in 2005 the Winnipeg Foundation and Wawanesa sponsored his “Bears on Broadway” project. In the same year, Historica and the University of Winnipeg commissioned a work called “Sharing Knowledge” for their Summer Institute.
Cyril Assiniboine also paints prairie landscapes which are richly interwoven with the people, symbols and legends of his culture. His work is represented in the offices of the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, The Southern Chiefs Organization, the Department of Indian And Native Affairs, the Federal Business Development Bank, and many private collections.
